RISE was an inspiring evening of reflection and celebration of Austin’s Black freedom communities. The event featured a screening from the film Rise by Funmi Ogunro, and a panel discussion exploring the legacy of these historic communities, established after Emancipation and Juneteenth. Panelists shared personal stories, highlighted the importance of unity, and honored the lasting contributions of descendants who continue to carry this rich heritage forward. DJ Wyldflower and Sunday Sessions set the vibe with music. Rising Roots invited guests to learn how to plant crops such as corn, tomatoes, okra, greens, and sweet potatoes, all traditionally grown in those communities, and take them home.
